Matt Charboneau is an American journalist. He has been serving as a reporter for The Detroit News since May 2005. Before that, Matt was a Copy editor/reporter for The Flint Journal from 1998 to 2005. Prior to that, the journalist served as a Copy editor/reporter at The Oakland Press from 1995 to 1998. Matt did not grow up wanting to work in newspapers. He was convinced that he would be playing baseball professionally. However, he did read the newspaper regularly as a kid.
Before heading out the door to the bus stop every morning, Matt poured his bowl of Frosted Flakes, sit at the table, and read everything written by Mike Downey in the Free Press that morning. The summer before sixth grade, the Tigers were on their way to winning the 1984 World Series when Matt really got sucked in. After that, he read Downey’s replacement, some whippersnapper called Mitch Albom, and as he went through high school, Matt followed all the prep sports.

Matt was lucky they still wanted him and by 2010, he was covering Michigan State.
