Martin Brundle F1 | 1984

In 1984, his Formula One career started with the Tyrrell Racing Organisation. Martin in a number of aggressive and fast drives, ending at the fifth position in his first race in Brazil. He then finished second in Detroit prior to being disqualified. Martin broke his ankles and both feet in a crash at the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix during a practice session. As a result, he was forced to miss the rest of the season while he recovered.

Doctors were led to consider amputating his left foot due to the severity of the damage to his left ankle. The damage would leave Martin with permanent injuries while he recovered. This hindered him from running and left-foot braking. Tyrrell was disqualified from the World Championship later in the year due to a technical infringement. Martin’s achievements for that season were wiped from the record books.

He remained with Tyrrell for the following twain seasons. The team struggled against the works teams despite the team’s switch from the Cosworth DFV to the turbocharged Renault engines in mid-1985. In his time with Tyrrell, Martin scored only eight points all in the 1986 season. He left Tyrrell in 1987 and relocated to the struggling West German team Zakspeed. However, Martin scored only two points during the year. Both were scored at the 1987 San Marino Grand Prix for finishing fifth.

In 1987, the two points he scored were the only points the Zakspeed team scored in their five-year (1985–1989) run in Formula One. Four years of Formula One racing for underfunded teams led him to pursue a new challenge. He took a year out in the year 1988. Since 1983, Martin had been associated with Jaguar when he drove TWR-prepared Jaguar XJS touring cars in the European Touring Car Championship.

He took two victories from his two starts with the Jaguar team. Martin took the second in partnership with Tom Walkinshaw, the TWR owner. Tom chose him as his lead driver when Jaguar decided to return to the American IMSA championship and the World Sportscar Championship. In the 1988 World Sportscar Championship season, the team performed well. Additionally, he won the world sportscar title with a record points haul.

The same year, Martin also won the Daytona 24 Hours. He became the test driver for Williams Racing. At the 1988 Belgian Grand Prix, Martin stood in for Nigel Mansell after Mansell was struck down with chickenpox. At the next race at Monza in Italy, he was to have driven Mansell’s Williams-Judd again. However, prior IMSA commitments with TWR saw the drive go to Jean-Louis Schlesser instead, a fellow World Sportscar Championship contender.

Martin returned to Formula One full-time in 1989 with the returning Brabham team who would be running the Judd V8 engine. In 1990, he also contested the American IROC series. At the temporary circuit at Burke Lakefront Airport (the only IROC victory for a British driver), Martin took the victory. Also, he finished 3rd in the overall standings. Martin rejoined Brabham in 1991. However, the squad had fallen even further down the grid and good results were inadequate.
