Lucy Hawking ( Full name: Catherine Lucy Hawking) is an English novelist, journalist, educator, and philanthropist. She is the daughter of writer Jane Wilde Hawking and theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Currently, Lucy lives in London where she works as a children’s novelist and science educator.
Currently, Lucy serves as the vice president of the National Star College. This is an institution dedicated to allowing people with disabilities to realize their potential through transition, personalized learning, and lifestyle services. The foundation provides care and education for young adults with complex and also multiple disabilities. At the same time, Lucy is a trustee of the Autism Research Trust.

She and Curved House Kids ( a British publisher ) won funding from the UK Space Agency in 2015 to produce an education project as part of astronaut Tim Peake’s education outreach. The result was Principia Space Diary, developed by Lucy and Kristen Harrison at Curved House Kids with expert input from Professor Peter MacOwan at the Queen Mary University of London.
It reached more than 60,000 students in the UK. This project was nominated for a Sir Arthur Clarke Award for Excellence in Space Education by the British Interplanetary Society. All of Lucy’s books and articles center around the theme of teaching science as well as education to children. Her interest in this topic was triggered after she witnessed one of her son’s friends ask her father about black holes at a party.
The father responded by telling his son that he’d “turn into spaghetti.” The son was delighted with that answer. This experience shaped Lucy’s perspective on using methods of entertainment including children’s literature and adventure films, to engage the new generation on “post-truth” politics and also scientific understandings.
