From 2001 to 2014, Lucy served as editor-in-chief of Condé Nast Publications’ Self. She launched a social shopping wish list platform called Hinted.
Lucy approved the retouched photograph of singer Kelly Clarkson’s cover image in 2009 for the September issue of Self, slimming down Clarkson’s figure. While battling a public backlash, Lucy asserted in her blog that it is common practice for publications to retouch photos of cover images.
She defended her position stating that it was only collaboration and not a news photograph. She said that they altered her appearance only to make her look her personal best and that they did not publish an act of fiction. “…But in the sense that Kelly is the picture of confidence, and she truly is, then I think this photo is the truest we have ever put on the newsstand.” She added.
