Lisa Ray ( Full name; Lisa Rani Ray) is a Canadian actress and model. She started her modeling career in India in the early 1990s and has worked internationally. Lisa appeared for leading Indian brands such as Bombay Dyeing and Lakmé. The model made her acting debut in 1996 in the Tamil film Nethaji. Lisa’s first Bollywood appearance was in the offbeat romantic thriller Kasoor in 2001.
Throughout her acting career, Lisa has demonstrated a penchant for issue-oriented portrayals, most notably in the 2005 Oscar-nominated Canadian film Water as well as the award-winning South African feature The World Unseen. The film was described by a reviewer as “one of the best-conceived queer films of the past year.” The model was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable form of blood cancer, in 2009.
Lisa started writing a blog called The Yellow Diaries, about her experiences of having cancer. Since then, her writing and columns have appeared regularly in multiple major publications. Lisa remains an active advocate of stem-cell therapy. She has participated in several successful fundraisers and cancer awareness campaigns as well.
She started hosting a popular travel show on Discovery Channel India in 2011. At the same time appearing as host and judge in Food Network’s highest-rated show, Top Chef Canada. The model opened an Instagram account in 2016 dedicated to poetry. Lisa announced in April 2010 that she was cancer-free, after an autologous stem cell transplant using her own stem cells. However, as multiple myeloma is an incurable disease, the model is not completely cured of the disease.

An advertisement for Bombay Dyeing where Lia appeared in a black swimsuit opposite Karan Kapoor earned the model her first taste of public attention. She subsequently met with Maureen Wadia, editor of Indian fashion magazine Gladrags. The meeting resulted in an iconic swimsuit cover that catapulted Lisa to nationwide fame in India. Lisa has written, “Most of my most fulfilling professional moments came to me via serendipity.”
By the time the Gladrags cover broke, Lisa was already back in Toronto ready to join university. However, her plans were thwarted after a tragic auto accident that consigned her mother to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Lisa went back to India for her modeling career and become one of the country’s first supermodels. She became the face of Lakmé and Bombay Dyeing. The model later acknowledged the coinciding of professional triumph and personal tragedy as a recurring theme in her life.
In 2016, Lisa wrote in Femina “I have come to recognize that every major turning point in my life is preceded by pain”, She would subsequently lend her face to iconic global brands as one of India’s most successful cover models including L’Oréal, MasterCard, De Beers, and Rado. Lisa was named the “ninth most beautiful woman of the millennium,” by Times of India poll. She was the only model in the top ten. Lisa co-anchored the TV show Star Biz on Star Movies and also appeared in a music video for Afreen Afreen.
