Lewis joined the channel in 1992 but he entered the news business at the age of 17 by working at WCOL Radio in Columbus, Ohio. While there, his work led to an offer to anchor the news at rival WBNS Radio in less than a year Lewis then moved on to serve as afternoon drive anchor at the legendary WING in Dayton having quickly learned the ropes.
His professionalism was noticed by WSAI in Cincinnati when the American hostages were taken in Iran. At WSAI, Lewis anchored and also reported from the field. He served as point man for coverage of major stories including the Air Canada crash as well as the Who concert tragedy. Lewis fell under the tutelage of the late Steve Douglas, whom he credits with kindling his desire to work in television news.
