At the age of seven, he started singing in church. In 1969, he joined the Chester Smith Band and had his first television appearance. A short time later, he worked with the country musician Del Reeves. Lee started singing in the church, while he was seven years old. At the age of 20 years, Lee founded his first Band and named it “The Apollos”.
His Band appeared in casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they mostly performed pop music. His band later broke and Lee joined the Chester Smith Band, where he had his first television appearance. He later left the band and began working with Del Reeves for a short period of time. In 1995, Lee cut his tour short in order to spend time with his children and his wife.
During his time off, Lee decided to build a theater in Sevierville, Tennessee. The theatre was named the “Lee Greenwood Theater” it was officially opened in April 1996. In November 2008, The 43rd president of the United States George W. Bush appointed Lee to a six-year term to the National Council on the Arts
