Laila first publicized her decision to become a professional boxer in an interview with Diane Sawyer on a Good Morning America show. After she told her father, Muhammad, that she was planning to be a professional boxer, he was not happy about Laila entering such a dangerous profession. Her first match was on October 8, 1999.
