Kwame has been recognized as “Rising Star Chef of the year” by various magazines including Food & Wine magazine, Esquire magazine, and the James Beard Foundation.
Kwame was named by Food & Wine magazine as one of its Best New Chefs in 2019. He was named Rising Star Chef of the Year at the 2019 James Beard Awards. Previously, Kwame had proposed to his then girlfriend Mya Allen at her family’s home in Boston in August 2016. The couple met Allen in February 2016 at a pop-up dinner featuring Kwame and his fellow “Top Chef” star Karen Akunowicz of Myers + Chang in Beantown. “ The two continued their friendship a few months later when Allen moved to New York, Kwame’s hometown, to attend the International Culinary Center. They stayed in touch before planning for a two-year engagement, with Allen moving to Washington. Unfortunately, the duo parted ways in early 2021.

In 2010, he went back to New York City where he was waiting tables at Tom Colicchio’s Craft. Shortly after, Kwame opened his own catering business called Onwuachi’s Coterie Catering. He then enrolled at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York in 2012. Kwame worked an externship at Per Se during culinary school. He worked as a line cook at Eleven Madison Park after his graduation. Kwame was a contestant on Top Chef (season 13) in 2015.

The chef opened his own restaurant called the Shaw Bijou in November 2016. The restaurant was based in a converted townhouse in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It served a 13-course tasting menu. The reviews of the restaurant were mixed, and critics questioned whether it was worth the price. Kwame scaled back the menu after two months and reduced prices. However, the primary investor closed the restaurant in January 2017.
Kwame was hired to open a restaurant in the new InterContinental Hotel on D.C.’s Southwest Waterfront in late 2017. He named the restaurant “Kith and Kin”, it served Afro-Caribbean cuisine influenced by Kwame’s family ties to Louisiana, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Nigeria. “Kith and Kin” received positive reviews from the Washington Post and the Michelin Guide. However, Kwame resigned his position at Kith/Kin in July 2020.
