Kristalina Georgieva (full name: Kristalina Ivanova Georgieva-Kinova) is an American economist from Bulgaria. She is currently serving as the chair as well as managing director of the International Monetary Fund. A position that she assumed in 2019. Georgieva is a former Chief Executive of the World Bank Group from 2017 to 2019. There, she also served as Acting President of the World Bank Group for two months one week (from 1 February 2019 to 8 April 2019).
Georgieva assumed the position following the resignation of the World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim. In addition, she once served as the Vice-President of the European Commission under Jean-Claude Juncker for three years (from 2014 to 2016). Georgieva has written over 100 academic papers so far and authored a microeconomics textbook. In Bulgaria and the US, Georgieva held a range of academic and consulting positions.
Apart from that, she has lectured on development topics in universities, such as the Australian National University, Tsinghua University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Yale University, the University of the South Pacific, and London School of Economics among others. In 2010, Georgieva was named the “European as well as Commissioner of the Year” by European Voice. They did that in recognition of her great leadership in the EU’s reaction to humanitarian crises.
