She was born and raised in Spokane, Washington by her parents Adele and William Vincent Kelley. Kitty’s father was a lawyer who served as president of the city’s bar association. She is the eldest of seven children and helped take care of her siblings since her mother was an alcoholic. Her five sisters include Mary Cary, Ellen, Margaret, Adele Monica, and Madeleine Sophie, and a brother, John. The family vacationed in Europe and spent summers at their two lakeside cottages in western Idaho.
