Kirk Herbstreit ( Full name: Kirk Edward Herbstreit ) is an American sportscaster. He currently serves as an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay, a tv program that covers college football and also provides color commentary on college football games on both ESPN and ABC. Kirk has won five Sports Emmy Awards for his TV work in various categories.
Before his current role, Kirk used to appear annually in EA Sports’ NCAA Football as a commentator. However, this stopped after the series was put on hiatus following NCAA Football 14. From 1989 to 1993, Kirk served as a quarterback for the Ohio State football team. Also, he played in a number of games during his junior season. Throughout his senior season, Kirk was the starting quarterback.

In 2018, Kirk was named to take over from Jon Gruden for night one of ESPN’s NFL Draft coverage, as Jon left his role there to return to the then-Oakland, currently Las Vegas Raiders. Kirk moved to ABC’s coverage with his GameDay colleagues after ABC picked up rights to air the first two nights of the Draft.
In 2020, Kirk, alongside Chris Fowler was named the first game of the Monday Night Football Kickoff Week doubleheader. One week later, he and Rece Davis worked a special Monday Night Football MegaCast on ESPN2 for the Saints-Raiders game. It became the first-ever NFL game to be played in Las Vegas the night that Monday Night Football celebrated its 50th anniversary.

While at Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio, Kirk was a quarterback for the Elks. He became the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. Also, Kirk was a standout player for both basketball and baseball. He became the first player to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1988 following the hiring of John Cooper as head coach in 1988. From 1989 to 1993, he was a four-year letter winner as a quarterback at Ohio State University. He finally led the team as a senior in 1992 after waiting his turn as a Buckeye starter behind Kent Graham and Greg Frey.
The same year, Kirk, along with linebacker Steve Tovar became a co-captain and was voted team MVP. He passed for 1,904 yards that season, including four 200-plus yard games, prior to losing to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Florida Citrus Bowl. In the rivalry game against Michigan, Kirk set the Ohio State record for pass completions (28) throwing for 271 yards in a 13–13 tie in 1992. This record stood until 2006 when Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith broke it.
