Ken Moelis ( Full Name: Kenneth D. Moelis) is a popular American billionaire investment banker who is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Moelis & Company, a global independent investment banking firm. He created the firm together with many fellow senior UBS investment bankers including Navid Mahmoodzadegan, Jeff Raich, John Momtazee, Todd Wadler, Elizabeth Crain, and Warren Woo.
He is also an adviser to Saudi Arabia’s public offering of its national oil company. Ken started his career at Drexel Burnham Lambert in 1981 where he would ultimately work as a managing director working for Michael Milken in the firm’s Los Angeles office. After the collapse of Drexel, Ken left with a portion of his group to join Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette where he worked as head of its corporate finance investment banking division. Under Ken, DLJ emerged as a famous investment banking firm in Los Angeles in the 1990s. After the acquisition of DLJ by Credit Suisse First Boston in 2000, Ken was appointed head of US investment banking of the combined firm in September 2000.
However, his time at CSFB would be short, reporting his departure for UBS (then known as UBS Warburg) just months after taking the core of his team with him, including many that would later join Moelis & Company. He recruited over 70 senior investment bankers to UBS within three months of his arrival. In his six years at UBS, Ken ultimately assumed the role of president of UBS Investment Bank and became credited with the build-out of UBS’s investment banking operation in the United States.
