Ken was drafted in the first round in the 1982 National Hockey League Entry Draft, which was the second pick of the New Jersey Devils after moving from Colorado. Before he was drafted Ken played at the Junior Hockey League for several teams including the Yorkton Terriers, the Saskatchewan Junior, the Great Falls Americans, and the Seattle Breakers. The Devils recruited Ken during the 1983–84 season.
Unfortunately, he cracked his fibula in a game against Hartford Whalers and had to miss over 40 games. Later after recovery, Ken was assigned to the Kamloops Junior Oilers of the WHL, where he played for the remainder of the season. During his career as a professional Hockey player, Ken acquired over 2,200 penalty minutes, holds a record playing in 255 consecutive regular-season games without scoring a goal. In the 1989-90 season, he scored six goals and 15 assists en route to a 21-point season.
Ken Along with Scott Stevens, a former Canadian Hockey professional player was part of the tough Devils defensive core that was rewarded the 1994–95, 1999–2000, and 2002–03 Stanley Cup. On March 24, 2006, The Devils retired his Ken’s uniform number, 3, Hence making him second to receive the honor after his former teammate Scott Stevens No. 4 was retired on February 3, 2006.
