In 2002, Kara was taken by force from her friend’s backyard, where she was watering the lawn. The incident occurred on June 24th when Richard Evonitz, the kidnapper, approached Kara pretending to be a magazine salesman and placed her inside a plastic container in the back of his vehicle.

After that, Richard took her to his apartment and held her captive for 18 hours, subjecting her to sexual assault and threatening her with a gun. Despite the dire circumstances, she remained composed and refrained from resisting or negotiating, instead choosing to bide her time until the opportunity presented itself.

Finally, when the abductor was asleep, she made a daring escape and fled to safety, finding refuge in a parked vehicle in the basement. Kara immediately contacted the police and took them to the kidnapper’s apartment. Richard Evonitz was urged to surrender peacefully but after a police dog was released, he shot himself and was declared dead at 10:52 p.m.

​On June 24, 2002, Richard Evonitz abducted 15-year-old Kara from a friend’s yard in Columbia, South Carolina. Richard Evonitz got out of his car and approached her, pretending to offer her some “pamphlets.” After Kara said her friend’s parents were not home Evonitz held a gun to her neck and then forced her into a plastic bin.

Richard Evonitz took her to his apartment, raped her, forced her to smoke marijuana, and tied her to his bed. After watching the evening news about her abduction, Richard Evonitz tied Kara to a homemade wooden apparatus to spread her legs. Kara was then able to free herself while Richard Evonitz was asleep, escape, and identify her abductor to the police using information she was able to find on Evonitz’s fridge. However, Richard Evonitz had fled after finding Kara gone.
