Judy Sheindlin professionally known as Judge Judy, is a popular American television personality, producer, author, and a previous prosecutor and Manhattan family court judge. She passed the New York State bar examination in 1965 and was a prosecutor in the family court system. New York City mayor Ed Koch appointed her in 1982 as a judge, first in criminal court, afterward as Manhattan’s supervising family court judge from 1986 to 1996.
Judy presided over her own court show, Judge Judy from September 16, 1996, through July 23, 2021. Her show spent its entire initial run as the highest Nielsen-rated courtroom series. Over much of that time, the series became the highest Nielsen-rated program in daytime television as well as a top performer in syndication. It won three Daytime Emmy Awards.
Over starring on Judge Judy, was the longest-serving television arbitrator in courtroom-themed programming history, a distinction that received her a place in 2015 in the Guinness World Records. Judy has also earned a Lifetime Achievement Emmy in 2019 due to her work.
