John Schaefer is an American podcast host, author, and radio host. He is a longtime host at WNYC. John started hosting the influential radio show New Sounds in 1982. In 2002, he became the host of Soundcheck. The journalist has produced many different programs for other New York Public Radio platforms. Also, he is the author of the book New Sounds: A Listener’s Guide to New Music. The book was first published in 1987.

He started his career in radio at WFUV in the late 1970s By then, the station was a student-run college radio station at Fordham University. By the time he graduated from college, John was the station’s programming director. From there, he spent a year at a classical station in Portland, Maine. He later returned to New York and joined WNYC in 1981.
In early 1982, John started developing his genre-spanning music program New Sounds with the show premiering that September. The show has been called “The No. 1 radio show for the Global Village” by Billboard and it has been syndicated by NPR and by stations in Australia and Taiwan.
John started the New Sounds Live concert series in 1986. He started hosting the art and music talk radio show Soundcheck for WNYC in 2002. He hosted a podcast called LPR Live from January 2016 until January 2017. The podcast showcased live performances from the Greenwich Village music venue (Le) Poisson Rouge. LPR show was broadcast on the online affiliate of the classical music station WQXR, the digital station Q2, which is owned by the non-profit New York Public Radio (NYPR) just like WYNC. John joined WQXR later in 2017, to host the weekly show The Furthermore and continues to advise on Q2.
NYPR announced in 2018, that they were expanding New Sounds into its own online platform. While John’s programs continued to be broadcast on their original stations, the New Sounds “online destination” collected most of his programs into one place. With this expansion, John started hosting a new titular online radio station. It was reported a year later that all of the New Sounds programs would be dropped by NYPR and John’s shows would no longer be broadcast by WNYC or WQXR.
NYPR announced, (after more than a week of an outcry by the public and musicians, with many calling John a vital part of the New York music scene) that they would be retaining New Sounds and all of its affiliated programs. Composer Philip Glass said “‘For we who live in New York to have [ John] in the position he’s in at the radio station, that’s amazing… There are very few professional music people — not only musicians, but writers about music — who you can really truly say have an open, expansive horizon. And he does.

In 1987, John published his first book titled New Sounds: A Listener’s Guide to New Music (New York: Harper & Row, 1987). In 1990, his book titled New Sounds: the Virgin Guide to New Music was published which he wrote for Virgin. John has contributed to The Cambridge Companion to Singing (2000) and also to Spin and Ear magazines. Apart from that, he has written liner notes for over 100 albums, including for Yo-Yo Ma and Terry Riley. John is currently one of the compilation producers on the various artists’ Invocation album.
