John R MacArthur ( Full name: John Rick MacArthur) is an American journalist and author. He currently serves as the president and publisher of Harper’s Magazine. Also, John writes a monthly column, in French, for Le Devoir on a wide range of topics such as politics and culture. He is a regular contributor to the Spectator (U.K.), the Toronto Star, Le Monde Diplomatique, and Le Monde.
Most of his books of books has covered US politics. John’s father J. Roderick MacArthur was disinherited by his father John D. MacArthur ( John’s grandfather) although J. Roderick served on the board of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation until his death in 1984. J. Roderick persuaded the foundation to partner in creating and funding a Harper’s Magazine Foundation in 1980 so as to acquire and operate the magazine of the same name.
This new entity acquired Harper’s Magazine for $250,000 (which was then losing almost $2 million per year and was on the verge of ceasing publication). In 1983, J. Roderick became the president and the publisher of Harper’s Magazine. He then received the Baltimore Sun’s H.L. Mencken Writing Award in 1993 for best editorial/op-ed column for his New York Times exposé of “Nayirah.” The latter was the Kuwaiti diplomat’s daughter who helped fake the Iraqi baby-incubator atrocity.
