He replied that he did not want to die and wants to live after thinking for a moment. That was the beginning of the rest of his life. For five months, John spent in the hospital. He underwent years of physical therapy and endured dozens of surgeries. John survived and life ultimately settled back into normal.
After this, all he ever wanted was for it to stay that way. He and his family kept that chapter of their lives private for years. They did not talk about the fire, what they had endured, or all they had learned. All that changed after John’s parents decided to write a book two decades later. They named it Overwhelming Odds. It chronicled the story of his family’s experience.
They printed one hundred copies and distributed them out to their family and friends who supported them during their long journey of healing. Their friends and family began telling their friends and family about John’s family’s little book as well as the message of hope carried inside. His family had to print more copies before they knew it and more after that. Up to this present day, the little book has sold nearly one hundred thousand copies.
