Formerly, he worked as a professional baseball player who played for several teams including New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Boston Red Sox. Furthermore, on May 15, 2009, the St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York awarded John an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.

In 2003, John signed a free-agent contract with the New York Yankees, where he played as a backup to catcher Jorge Posada.
