John Barnes ( Full name: John Charles Bryan Barnes MBE ) is a former professional football player and manager. Currently, he works as an author, commentator, and pundit for ESPN and SuperSport. Initially, he was a quick, skillful left winger, but moved to central midfield later in his career. John won two league titles with Liverpool and two cup finals at Wembley. Also, he was an FA Cup runner-up with Watford, Liverpool, and Newcastle United. John earned 79 international caps for England.
John was a Watford 1984 FA Cup Final runner-up. In 1983, he debuted for England and joined Liverpool for £900,000 in 1987. In his 10 seasons there, Liverpool won the then-top-flight First Division twice and the FA Cup twice. John scored 106 goals in 403 matches. His last cap was in 1995. He was born to his parents, Roderick Kenrick “Ken” Barnes (a Trinidadian) and Frances Jeanne Hill (a Jamaican) in Kingston, Jamaica. Initially, John was raised in Jamaica. His father was a military officer from Trinidad and Tobago. He emigrated to Jamaica in 1956 as a member of the West India Regiment. Roderick joined the Jamaica Defence Force when formed after the nation’s 1962 independence. Before that, he served as the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion Jamaica Regiment.
Roderick was promoted to colonel remaining in the army until retiring in 1989. While in the army, Roderick was a semi-professional footballer for a Jamaica National Premier League club. Also, he served as the captain of the Jamaica national football team. John moved to London, England with his family when at the age of 12. In 1981, he joined Watford at the age of 17. He played 296 competitive games for them scoring 85 goals.

He signed for Liverpool FC on June 12th, 1987. John debuted for the Reds along with Beardsley on August 15, 1987, in the 2–1 league win at Arsenal at Highbury. After 9 minutes, John and Beardsley combined to set up Aldridge to score.
His first Liverpool goal was on 12 September beating Oxford United 2–0 at Anfield. In his first Liverpool season, the team won the League title and remained undefeated for the first 29 games of the season. John left Liverpool on a free transfer on August 13, 1997, three months before his 34th birthday, after a decade at Liverpool with 407 appearances, 108 goals, and five major trophies. In his final season at Anfield, he had missed just three Premier League games, scoring four goals including a memorable late winner against Southampton just after Christmas. Southampton had led the table for much of the first half of the season prior to being overhauled by eventual champions Manchester United at the end of January and settling for a fourth-place finish.
