Joel writes the paper’s “Mini Crossword” on New York Times crossword puzzles. He has created the Mini crossword each day since 2014. The Mini was the brainchild of Matt Hural, a former Games team director at The Times. He wanted something free and easy for visitors to the app to play and, in consultation with Will Shortz, they came up with a daily 5×5 crossword.

Joel uses puzzle-constructing software called Crossfire, along with the XWord Info word list, which I’ve helped curate a bit. He interned for three summers with Will Shortz, the Times’ crossword puzzle editor. After graduating from Pomona in 2014, Joel began working for him full-time.
