In 1980, the journalist launched his radio business by serving as a  co-host of Monday Night Sports Talk on KSTP radio alongside then-St. Paul Pioneer Press sports columnist named Patrick Reusse.

The show was famours for its cast of callers doing impressions of different celebrities. The lack of actual sports content was a running gag on “MNST” between Joe, Reusse, and the audience. The show aired until  Joe launched his daily “Garage Logic” program in the early nineties. The “Sports Talk” brand lived on in the duo’s weekend show, “Saturday Morning Sports Talk”. The show has continued with the weekday version of “Sports Talk” which started airing on Monday, February 15, 2010.

Joe Soucheray Podcast | Garage Logic

On April 29, 1993, Joe started hosting his daily Garage Logic drive-time radio show on KSTP.  The journalist acts as the mayor of a mythical town bearing the same name Garage Logic, just as the radio show: Garage Logic, the county seat of Gumption County. The motivating goal and idea are to promote traditional values. It’s also a kind of criticism of modern American pop culture as well as Minnesota’s dominant liberal culture. Joe prefers to stick with the less philosophical slogan that states “Anything that needs to be figured out can be figured out in the garage.”

The journalist has been joined by producer Matt “The Rookie” Michalski on the air since the late 1990s. Matt serves as the voice behind many skits and imitations on “Garage Logic” and also “Saturday Morning Sports Talk”. He was often held to mythical 6:00 pm meetings with Joe, after the conclusion of the show, if he angered Joe’s character by not paying attention. More often,  Joe could be heard asking Matt if he actually listens to the show that he is producing.

The show has occupied some slots during its run as the station’s other programming has shifted. However, for over a decade, the show merged with Rush Limbaugh’s program and became part of a combination that made the KSTP network the dominant talk station in the market.  In 2006, Rush left the station and Joe became KSTP’s sole marquee talent.

Joe Soucheray Columns | Pioneer Press

In 1973, the journalist landed a sports-writing job at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. In 1980, he teamed up with Patrick Reusse who served as a sports writer at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The pair started hosting KSTP Radio’s “Monday Night Sports Talk.” The show had nothing to do with sports. The fans/listeners found great humor in a wacky parade of callers such as the addled character who  called often  just to say two words: “orange pop.”

Joe and Reusse switched papers, but their radio show continued. Later, the show moved to Saturday mornings. Currenlty, they proudly proclaim it to be the “longest-running sports talk show in history.”  The show has little to do with sports but no one complains. Joe elected himself as the mayor of Garage Logic and started a daily radio show by the same name in 1993, 9 years after he started his 25-year stint as a general columnist for the Pioneer Press.

As he sat in his garage one day, he used an unlit Hoyo DeMonterrey cigar to calculate the number of years he has been in the air. Joe realized that over the years he has hosted or co-hosted 5,550 radio programs. Apart from that, he has also written 5,500 newspaper columns.
