Jeremy Stoppelman is an American business executive. He is the co-founder and current CEO of Yelp which was founded in 2004. Jeremy briefly worked for @Home Network before he went to work at X.com. The company was renamed PayPal and Jeremy became the VP of Engineering. However, he left his role at PayPal to attend Harvard Business School. Jeremy and a group of friends came up with the idea for Yelp Inc during a summer internship at MRL Ventures.
In 2012, Jeremy turned down an acquisition offer by Google and took the company public. Following his graduation, Jeremy took a job with @Home Network. He accepted a position as an engineer at X.com after four months of working for @Home Network. Later, the company changed its name to PayPal. While working at PayPal, Jeremy met businessman Max Levchin, who later became an investor in Jeremy’s company, Yelp Inc. Jeremy became the V.P. of engineering at PayPal.
He is one among the group of PayPal’s early employees sometimes referred to as the PayPal Mafia. In 2003, Jeremy left PayPal after its acquisition by eBay. Jeremy rang the bell for the New York Stock Exchange in March 2012 after Yelp went public. According to him, the biggest challenge at Yelp has been “the same problem Google faces in its rankings.” Reviewers have been sued by Business owners and this has resulted in negative reviews and raising allegations that Yelp tampers with reviews to favor the companies that advertise.
This has led to legal troubles for the company. Jeremy accepted a salary of $1 in February 2013. However, he continues to earn income from the investment of his 11 percent interest in the company. Jeremy has a hands-on management style and sits at a desk among his employees. An open letter on Medium to Jeremy by a San Francisco employee of Yelp subsidiary Eat24, Talia Jane, went viral in 2016.
The letter described how Talia and her coworkers were struggling on their wages to afford groceries or winter heating in the Bay Area. Talia lost her job after the letter went viral though Jeremy said this was not due to the letter. Two months later, Yelp increased wages and benefits for low-level employees. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeremy praised fully remote work in June 2022, eliminating mandatory time in the office. He also announced plans to close 450,000 square feet of office space in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
