Jamie Durie ( Full name: Jamie Paul Durie OAM) is an Australian horticulturist and landscape designer, television producer, television host, furniture designer, and author of eleven books. He has written largely on landscape architecture, garden design, and lifestyle. He is the founder and the current director of the design company called PATIO Landscape Architecture and Durie Design.
Jamie won the Gold Medal Award at Britain’s prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show in 2008 in Chelsea, London for Australian Garden that he designed. He has hosted more than 50 design shows around the world as of 2018. In 2008, he hosted the Australian lifestyle program called The Outdoor Room, broadcast on the Seven Network. Also, he hosted the dynamic design makeover show HGTV Showdown the following year.

His mother and maternal grandmother are both Sri Lankan. Jamie’s grandmother, Daphne de Zylva, was born in Sri Lanka and she met her English husband in the air force during the war. The couple moved to Australia in the 1950s.
Jamie recalls that he used to bake and garden with his grandmother. He was taught how to make his first curry by his grandmother. Due to his family roots, Jamie has inherited a love of the Sri Lankan culture and lifestyle. His parents separated when Jamie was 10 years old and he relocated with his mother and brother Chris, to the Gold Coast, in Queensland. Jamie’s paternal grandmother, called Nanna worked as a volunteer surf-lifesaver on the NSW Central Coast. He left high school in Brisbane at age 15.
Jamie tried his hand at cabinetmaking, and modeled beachwear part-time. He got his showbiz start in his teens as an exotic dancer in Manpower Australia, an Australian all-male revue troupe. His agent introduced him to a touring dance troupe, Manpower Australia, which was best known for its male dance performances as well as its dancers’ distinctive physical attractiveness and sex appeal. Jamie toured internationally with Manpower Australia for seven years acting as manager. Also, he was the principal dancer who performed acrobatics and trapeze acts to large audience venues in Las Vegas, NV.

From 2007 to 2010, he hosted the US PBS series The Victory Garden, a PBS network’s longest-running gardening TV series. Jamie relocated the concept of the series after the end of The Outdoor Room on the Seven Network in 2010, he broadcast the show on the American HGTV network as The Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie. Since he was not able to bring his own Australian design team along, Jamie put together a new team of top-notch designers, horticulturists, and contractors.
In his HGTV series, Jamie rescues forlorn yards in Southern California with design schemes inspired by gardens and landscapes from all over the world. The show is filmed mostly in and around Los Angeles. It uses sustainable ideas such as low-water plantings and reclaimed hardscapes to design intimate, livable environments for erstwhile non-gardeners. Jamie has co-presented as a visiting expert in gardening & landscaping on the Australian lifestyle program called The Living Room since 2015. The program airs on Network Ten. Currently, Jamie is contracted to RUSH Entertainment Group, which organizes events.

He was the television host of the Australian lifestyle program The Outdoor Room in 2008, broadcast on Seven Network, with repeats broadcast on 7Two. The premise of the show was that Jamie set out to “bring the world to your very own backyard”.
