Irshad Manji is a popular Ugandan-born Canadian author and educator who is the founder of the Moral Courage Project. In 2004, Irshad published the book The Trouble with Islam Today, and in 2011 Allah, Liberty, and Love. Irshad also produced a PBS documentary in America at a Crossroads series, called Faith Without Fear, which became nominated in 2008 for an Emmy Award.
A retired journalist and television presenter, Irshad is an advocate of a revolutionary interpretation of Islam and a critic of the literalist explanation of the Qur’an. Irshad’s recent book, Don’t Label Me (2019), offers methods on how to heal political, racial, and cultural differences. She started her profession serving in politics in the 1990s.
Irshad worked as a legislative aide in the Canadian parliament for New Democratic Party member of parliament Dawn Black, later as press secretary in the Ontario government at Ontario New Democratic Party cabinet minister Marion Boyd, and finally as a speechwriter at federal NDP leader Audrey McLaughlin. While she was 24, Arshad became the national affairs editorialist for the Ottawa Citizen and the blossoming member of an editorial board for any Canadian daily. Her book The Trouble with Islam Today (originally called The Trouble with Islam) was released by St. Martin’s Press in 2004.
