Ilse Crawford Design School
The London-based designer and educator authored a book titled “A Frame for Life” (Rizzoli), which came out on October 21, 2014. Ilse is no fan of superficial décor. She became the first editor of Elle Decoration U.K. at age 27 after stints working in an architecture office and as a design journalist. Ilse must’ve seen around 5,000 different interior spaces. The gig led to this epiphany. Sometimes, design is just novelty masquerading as modernity, restyling without relevance.
Driven by the idea that design should enhance life, Ilse founded the Man and Well-Being department in 2000 at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. While there, she met her now husband Oscar Pena who is a creative director of the Dutch electronics firm Philips Design. Ilse established the interiors firm Studio Ilse in 2004 which designed the Soho House in New York and the Hong Kong restaurant Duddell’s, and pieces for Georg Jensen and IKEA.
Ilse and Oscar stepped down from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2019 after more than 20 years. The two were both long-standing heads of bachelor programs. The Dutch design school announced on May 10, 2019, that the couple would leave DAE at the end of their team in 2019. Ilse served as the head of the Man and Well-Being course for 21 years, while her husband served as a leader of the Man of Activity program for 23 years.
