She was hired as a staff writer at Suck.com in 1996. Suck.com is a webzine that is one of the web’s earliest ad-supported content sites. Heather collaborated with artist Terry Colon to write the popular “Filler” comic strip for the site under the pen name Polly Esther. She started writing an advice column on Suck in May 2001.

However,  the site went under a month later. In 2003, Heather started writing for Salon as their TV critic. She then became one of the original columnists for The Daily in 2011. The Daily is the world’s first iPad-only news app. She exited that position soon after the app launched. In December 2012, the site was shuttered by its parent News Corporation.

Heather began an advice column on her personal blog called Dear Rabbit in 2001. In 2012, Heather pitched an advice column called Ask Polly to The Awl which ran as a weekly feature.
