Graeme Souness ( Full name Graeme James Souness ) is a Scottish former professional football player and manager. Currently, he servespundit on Sky Sports. A midfielder, Graeme was the captain of the successful Liverpool team of the early 1980s. He was a player-manager of Rangers in the late 1980s and captain of the Scotland national team.
Also, Graeme played for Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesbrough and Sampdoria. His managerial career started when he joined Rangers. He led the team to three Scottish titles and four league cups. Later, Graeme joined Liverpool as manager. He went on to become manager of Southampton, Galatasaray, Benfica, Torino, Blackburn Rovers, and Newcastle.

He sold Souness to Middlesbrough for £30,000 in 1972. Graeme made his first appearance for Middlesbrough on January 6, 1973 in a 2–1 league defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage. On December 11, 1973, he had his first goal in a 3–0 league victory over Preston North End at Ayresome Park. Fraeme’s tenacious style started to garner acclaim during his time at Middlesbrough. Graeme’s first season with the team saw Middlesbrough finish fourth, two places and 14 points short of promotion.

One of Jack’s first signings was experienced former Celtic midfielder Bobby Murdoch, a fellow Scot whom Graeme later cited as an important influence in the development of his playing style. He was out of work for over a year after leaving Liverpool, despite reports linking him with a return to Middlesbrough at the end of the 1993–94 season , this time as a manager but the job which went to Bryan Robson instead. In June 1995,Graeme went to manage Galatasaray in Turkey, and again managed to court controversy with local issues.
He almost sparkled a riot after placing a large Galatasaray flag into the centre circle of the pitch of arch rivals Fenerbahçe. Galatasaray had just beaten them in the Turkish Cup final on 24 April 1996. The iconic image of Graeme planting the flag drew comparisons with Turkish hero Ulubatlı Hasan. The latter was killed as he planted the Ottoman flag at the end of the Siege of Constantinople. This earned Graeme the nickname “Ulubatlı Souness”

He had major heart surgery in April 1992. Them, a controversy arose after the FA Cup semi-final against Portsmouth, which Liverpool needed a replay and penalties to win. An interview was due to be published in the Sun he event of a victory for Liverpool, with Graeme celebrating the win and his own successful surgery. The photograph which accompanied the interview was of Graeme in his hospital ward, kissing his girlfriend with joy at his own recovery and his team’s win.
The interview was planned to go in alongside the match report on April 14, 1992. However, he late end to the game meant the deadline for publication was missed and the report. Interview and photograph went in on 15 April instead, wich was the third anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. Liverpool fans reacted with fury after they saw he interview was conducted with The Sun. The newspaper had been reviled and widely shunned on Merseyside after its false reporting on the disaster.
