Gillian Anderson is an American actress. She has played FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the series The X-Files and DSU Stella Gibson in the BBC/RTÉ crime drama television series The Fall among others.

Among other honors, Gillian has won two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. She moved to New York City to further her acting career after college. After beginning her career on stage, Gillian achieved international recognition for her role as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on the American sci-fi drama series The X-Files.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois, to her parents Rosemary “Posie” Alyce and Homer Edward “Ed” Anderson III. Gillian’s mother was a computer analyst, and later vice president of Neurofibromatosis Inc., the neurofibromatosis support group of West Michigan. Her father owned a film post-production company. She is of English, German, and Irish ancestry.

Soon after her birth, Gillian’s parents moved to Puerto Rico for 15 months, then to London. The family relocated so that her father could attend the London Film School. During her childhood, she lived in north London’s Crouch End and Haringey.

When Gillian was 11 years old, her family returned to the United States, settling in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They continued to keep a flat in London and spent their summers there. She has two siblings Zoe and Aaron.
