At first, Tindyebwa was not sure whether he could trust Emma Thompson but in the end, she tracked him down and invited him for a Christmas Eve dinner. The dinner was held in West Hampstead, North London in their £15 million home which turned into frequent stays.
In addition, he was given his room and would stay for weekends which would in the end turn into weeks. Finally, Emma and Gred decided to “informally” adopt Tindy at the time when he was allowed to make his own legal decisions. Tindy lost his biological dad when he was nine years old due to Aids. When he was 12 years old, soldiers went to his village in Rwanda with machine guns to kidnap children. The militia took Tindy with the other nine children and trooped them all over unfamiliar bushes for days.
As a result of the kidnapping, Tindy was separated from his three sisters. He later arrived at a prison camp where he stayed for three years being brainwashed, radicalized, and also trained as a child soldier. He finally managed to escape Rwanda at the age of 16 after a charity worker from Care International assisted him in boarding a flight to London where he claimed asylum. Following months of sleeping on the streets of Trafalgar Square, Tindy eventually came across Emma Thompson at the refugee council event.
