Ruth Westheimer is a noted German-American sex–therapist, talk show host, author, professor, and Holocaust survivor. She is better known as Dr. Ruth. She has authored numerous books on sex and relationships. Westheimer has also hosted talk shows where she answered related questions to sex. She has worked as an adjunct associate professor for five years. Moreover, she advocated psychotherapy and sorting relationship issues. In addition, she has a documentary on Ask Dr. Ruth directed by Ryan White was in theaters in 2019.

She lived in an apartment in Frankfurt with her parents and her paternal grandmother, Selma, who was a widow. Her father took her to the synagogue in the Nordend district of Frankfurt as she was given an early grounding in Judaism.
Her father was 38 years old when he was taken by Nazis and sent to the Dachau concentration camp a week after Kristallnacht. Westheimerparents sent her to a school in Switzerland for safety when she was 10 years and her mother was left behind with her elderly grandmother. Her mother and grandmother were killed after they were sent to concentration camps by the Gestapo. Westheimer immigrated to British-controlled Mandatory Palestine after World War II ended.
She was seriously wounded in action by an exploding shell during a mortar fire attack on Jerusalem during the 1947–1949 Palestine war during her 20th birthday. From the attack, she almost lost her feet. Her father was murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942. In 1965, she became a naturalized United States citizen and regained her German citizenship in 2007 through the German Citizenship Project.

She has been married three times briefly on the first two marriages. In each of her marriages, she was able to get relationship advice. Her third marriage was to fellow Holocaust survivor Manfred ‘Fred’ Westheimer when she was 32 years. Fred and Westheimer met on a ski tow in the Catskills as he had escaped Nazi Germany.
The couple were married for 36 years until Fred died in 1997. She has two children who have doctorates, Miriam Yael Westheimer and Joel Westheimer. Miriam married Joel Henry Einleger after spending six years in Israel. Joel is a professor at the University of Ottawa working in citizenship education. Additionally, Westheimer has four grandchildren.

After she moved to Switzerland, as a girl, she was not allowed o take classes at the local school. However, a fellow orphan boy would sneak her his textbooks at night so she could read them. When she was 22 years old, she moved to France in 1950 where she studied psychology under psychologist Jean Piaget at the University of Paris.
Westheimer earned an undergraduate degree despite not having had a high school education. later, she taught psychology at the Sorbonne.
