Additionally, after a visit to WOKR-TV, now 13 WHAM, as a boy, he knew what he wanted to do when he grew up. During his spare time, Doug serves on the board of the Pluta Cancer Foundation and he is also involved with Daystar, which provides daycare for babies with serious medical issues. Moreover, he is involved with HUGS which is a local medical organization whose volunteers perform surgery to correct facial deformities on children in Guatemala, Vietnam, and Ecuador.

Sadly, his parents died in September 2020 three days apart, his father died aged 93  on September 13 while his mother died aged 92 on September 16.
