Declan Walsh Pakistan
In May 2013, he was expelled from Pakistan, an experience Declan wrote about in his 2020 book christened The Nine Lives of Pakistan: Dispatches from a Precarious State. However, he continued covering the country from London. Declan learned by letter on 9 May 2013, that the Pakistan Ministry of Interior, citing undesirable activities, canceled his visa that had been valid until January 2014 and he had seventy-two hours to leave the country.
State security officials detained Declan while he was in public reporting on Pakistan’s general election and voting behavior in Lahore on May 11, 2013. The following morning, they escorted him to the airport. The New York Times as well as other international media organizations protested his expulsion. This was then seen as counter to Pakistan’s current policy on freedom of the press and democracy.
Later, Pakistani news media reported that he had been placed on Pakistan’s official blacklist. They also reported that Declan had been declared persona non grata. Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister assured a visiting delegation from the Committee to Protect Journalists in March 2014 that an immediate review of the incident would be conducted. Furthermore, Nawaz’s statement was an encouragement to Jill Abramson, the editor of the New York Times.
