On January 17, 2017, Deborah felt sick and cold. She was completely exhausted, as though someone had taken the bones out of her body. The journalist had gone to bed the previous night as normal. healthy 40-year-old woman only to wake up feeling dreadful. Four days later, she was in intensive care having been diagnosed with one of the world’s rarest diseases.
She had a life-threatening blood disorder called atypical hemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS). The illness had caused acute kidney failure. As she comes to terms with this medical car crash, Deborah wanted to share her experience to help to raise awareness about ultra-rare conditions such as hers and to say thank you to the NHS doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians who saved her life.
