David Velasco is an American writer and editor. He currently serves as the editor-in-chief of Artforum International. David joined Artforum in 2017.He has written on a breadth of topics such as fine art, literature, and cultural touchstones including Fire Island Pines. David organized the “Modern Dance” book series in 2016 which the Museum of Modern Art published.
This book featured monographs on Sarah Michelson, Ralph Lemon, and Boris Charmatz. Also, he wrote the introduction to Weight of the Earth in 2018 which is a collection of tape journals by the artist David Wojnarowicz. David published The Tear Gas Biennial under his vision for a more transparent and equitable culture industry. The Tear Gas Biennial is an open letter by critic Tobi Haslett, artist Hannah Black, and writer Ciarán Finlayson.
The letter calls for artists to pull their work from the 2017 Whitney Biennial in protest of Warren Kanders’ position as the co-chair of the board of the museum. They accuse Kanders of making a living from selling tear gas and other weaponized technology. Adrian Piper permitted David to be the first person to reconceive her classic 1982–84 piece Funk Lessons in 2020. The performance was performed at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt on February 15, 2020. It was titled David Velasco Teaches Adrian Piper’s “Funk Lessons” and was his first public project as an artist.

He left the West Coast in 2002 and relocated to New York City to attend New York University. David published a monograph called Sarah Michelson: Modern Dance later that year which was published by D.A.P. The book contains several original essays and an interview with Michelson and the cultural history of her oeuvre which was written by her peers.
