Later on, Cory started serving for KAKE-10 in 2001, when he saw his first Kansas supercell thunderstorm come marching across the plains. Following reporting several tornadoes and severe weather outbreaks, he decided to move to Florida to experience some tropical storms. Cory’s timing for that was good. Cory reported his first four hurricanes: Charley, Frances, Ivan, as well as Jeanne in 2004. Afterward, in 2005, it was Hurricanes Dennis, Katrina, Ophelia, Rita and Wilma.
As he was serving in Florida at WFTV-9, he decided to strengthen his weather knowledge and earned his Bachelor of Science in Geoscience from Mississippi State’s distance learning program in 2010. His tenure focus switched from photographing the news to forecasting and covering the weather as a meteorologist.
He spent 10 years at WFTV in Orlando reporting 14 hurricanes and 4 other named tropical storms. An example of his most memorable moment was riding a hurricane hunter aircraft into the eye of the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, Wilma, in October of 2005. An additional memorable moment was seeing EF-5 tornado damage for the first time in Hackleburg, Alabama. He also won a Suncoast Regional Emmy award due to his coverage of the April 2011 tornado super outbreak across the state of Alabama.
