Chris Hodges is the founding father and the senior pastor of the Church of the Highlands. He started the ministry in 1984 serving as a youth pastor at Bethany World Prayer Center. A year after his marriage, he went to Colorado Springs and served as a youth pastor as well as senior associate pastor for the New Life Church. In 1994, Hodges made a comeback to the Bethany World Prayer Center but now as an associate pastor.
While in Bethany World Prayer Center, he hosted a daily TV program known as “Lifeline”. In 2000, Hodges relocated to Birmingham with an aim of starting a new church. He began training leaders for the new Church of the Highlands from the Association of Related Churches. In February 2001, the first service took place at Mountain Brook High School’s auditorium.
In 2007, the church was now the fastest-growing congregation in the country with its own campus. Additionally, in 2020 the church was operating more than 20 satellite campuses and had more than 60,000 members. Hodges’ collaboration with the Evangelicals for Trump Coalition as well as his social media interactions with the right-wing led to the questioning of his cultural insensitivity in regard to African-Americans culture. It was brought into sharper focus during the George Floyd protests in 2020. However, Hodges apologized for his hurtful actions later on June 2.
