Chief Justice John Roberts is an American lawyer and jurist. Currently, he serves as the chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Roberts was nominated by President George W. Bush to replace William Rehnquist and sworn in on September 29, 2005.
Roberts has created the majority opinion in several landmark cases, including Shelby County v. Holder, and National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, to name a few. Moreover, he has been described as having a conservative judicial philosophy but has shown a willingness to work with the Supreme Court’s liberal bloc.
Roberts conducted the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. He also served as a law clerk for Circuit Judge Henry Friendly and then-associate justice William Rehnquist before taking a position in the attorney general’s office. Subsequently, Roberts served the Reagan administration and the George H. W. Bush administration.

However, Bush withdrew his nomination of Roberts to be an associate justice when Chief Justice William Rehnquist passed away on September 3, 2005. The president then renominated Roberts on September 6, 2005, to be the 17th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He requested that the U.S. Senate hastened his nomination to fill the vacancy prior to the start of the Supreme Court session beginning in early October.
On September 22nd, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Roberts’ nomination by a vote of 13-5. In Addition, Senators Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Joe Biden (D-Del.), and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) cast the dissenting votes. Finally, the full U.S. Senate committed Roberts on September 29th on a vote of 78-22.
