Since her family began watching the news on WHIO when Cheryl was a kid, she wanted to work at WHIO. Cheryl was drawn to the profession of journalism because she had always been curious about what’s going on in our community, the nation, and the world. Cheryl grew up reading the newspaper and vividly remembers watching TV news coverage of JFK’s funeral and Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk. She takes very seriously the viewers’ trust and has strived every day of her career to be accurate, fair, and balanced in her reporting.
In her senior year of college, Cheryl interned at WKRC radio where she learned to really use what she was learning. During those days, almost everyone served in radio news before moving into television news. A Radio was a great training ground for writing fast, developing one’s delivery, and meeting hourly deadlines. Later, Cheryl worked in radio for a period of three years—with stints at WING in Dayton and WCKY in Cincinnati, prior to landing a job as a reporter at WHIO-TV in August of 1981.
For much of the 1980s, Cheryl covered the Dayton Police/Montgomery County Courts beat, reporting on all kinds of stories from the local criminal justice system. She also covered many big cases and high-profile trials. In those years, Cheryl won four regional Emmy Awards. Among three of them were due to Spot News (now called Breaking News), such as live coverage of a grueling police search for a teenager who was abducted by her mother’s killer. In 1990, she earned an Emmy due to Investigative Reporting, for a three-part series on repeat drunk driving offenders.
