Previously, he was hired for twelve years at The New York Times, before leaving and joining The Detroit News. However, after working at the station for two years Charlie left in October 2010.

Immediately after he graduated from the university, Charlie kicked off his journalism career at The New York Times, where he was hired on a ten-week minority scholarship. He was later promoted to the station’s staff reporter, Charlie held the position from 1995 to 2007.
Later on, Charlie left the station to pursue “US Guys,” which was his second book. Charlie confessed in an interview with Arthur Sulzberger Jr, who by then was the publisher and chairman of The Times. Charlie stated he was leaving because he did not have the right to say what he really wanted to talk about. He wanted to talk about race and class but the station strongly disagreed with him.
In 2001, Charlie was awarded the Pulitzer Award for contributing to “How Race Is Lived in America,” a series that aired in the New York Times. Additionally, in 1999 Charlie was also awarded the Mike Berger Award from the Columbia University School of Journalism due to his distinguished writing about New York City. In 2006, that was from August to November, Charlie wrote the “American Album” which was an eight-part series that aired on The New York Times.
Soon after leaving The New York Times for 12 years, Charlie later joined The Detroit News, however, after working at the station for two years, Charlie left the station in October 2010. He was later hired at WJBK-TV, a Fox affiliate in Detroit, however, on December 1, 2016, Charlie left the station and started hosting his very own podcast.
