Berniece Baker Miracle was an American centenarian and writer. She was known for her memoir “My Sister Marilyn” (1994) about her half-sister, actress Marilyn Monroe. Monroe was an American actress, model, and singer, famous for playing comedic “blonde bombshell” characters.
Throughout her life, Miracle served as a manufacturing inspector, bookkeeper, and costume designer. Moreover, she turned 100 in July 2019. Miracle now lives retired in Gainesville and remains one of the last living people to have known Monroe intimately.

She was born in Venice, California, to John ‘Jap’ Baker and his wife Gladys. She was the secondborn, and her brother Robert was firstborn born in 1917. Miracle’s father was 16 years older than her mother, who had married him aged just 15. Their marriage was challenging, and in 1923, Miracle’s parents separated. After the divorce, Baker abducted both Miracle and her brother Robert and returned to his hometown of Flat Lick, Kentucky.
Gladys followed them there, however, she was unable to recover her children. Gladys eventually returned to Los Angeles and after another failed marriage, became pregnant with Norma Jeane who was born in 1926. In 1933, Miracle’s brother Robert tragically died from kidney failure aged 16. Two years later, Gladys suffered a nervous breakdown. Miracle believed her mother was dead, however, she received a letter from Gladys in 1938.
There she learned of her half-sister’s existence for the first time. Following Norma Jean’s rise to fame and turn into Marilyn Monroe, Miracle stayed in touch with her half-sister. Unfortunately, Monroe died in 1962 and left Miracle $10,000 in her final will. Together with Monroe’s ex-husband Joe DiMaggio and her business manager Inez Melson, Miracle arranged her funeral, choosing her casket and dress.
