Ben Bernanke (Full Name: Ben Shalom Bernanke) is a popular American economist who works as a Distinguished Fellow in Residence with the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution. He is also the Author of The Courage to Act. Ben is also a senior adviser to the asset management company PIMCO. From 2004 to 2014, Ben worked as the 14th chairman of the Federal Reserve. During his time as chairman, Ben oversaw the Federal Reserve’s response to the late-2000s financial crisis, for which he was appointed the 2009 Time Person of the Year.
Prior to becoming Federal Reserve chairman, Ben was a tenured professor at Princeton University and chaired the Department of Economics there from 1996 until September 2002, when he went on public service leave. He won the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, jointly alongside research on banks and financial crises”, more specifically due to his analysis of the Great Depression. From August 5, 2002, to June 21, 2005, Ben was a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and proposed the Ben doctrine.
He then worked as chairman of President George W. Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers prior to President Bush nominating him to replace Alan Greenspan as chairman of the United States Federal Reserve. Ben’s first term started on February 1, 2006. He was confirmed for a second term as chairman on January 28, 2010, following being renominated by President Barack Obama, who afterward referred to him as “the epitome of calm.” Ben’s second term ended on January 31, 2014, when he was replaced by Janet Yellen on February 3, 2014.
