In January 2016, Arlene became First Minister of Northern Ireland and shared power with Martin McGuinness.

This scheme became set to cost the taxpayer £490 million and there were allegations of corruption surrounding Arlene’s role in implementing the scheme. Martin asked Arlene to step aside as First Minister while her involvement in the scheme was investigated, but Arlene denied to step aside or resign and said that the voices calling for her resignation were those of “misogynists and male chauvinists”.

On 28 April 2021, following over 20 DUP MLAs and four DUP MPs signed a letter “…voicing no confidence in her leadership”, Arlene reported that she would resign as party leader and as First Minister. Arlene was succeeded by Edwin Poots as DUP leader on 28 May 2021. She left office as First Minister on 14 June 2021 and was succeeded by Paul Givan as First Minister on 17 June 2021.
