Andrew lost his England place in 2001, but he remodeled his bowling action and gained a place on the 2001–02 tour to India. He then scored his maiden Test century in 2003.
He suffered regular injuries throughout his international career, often due to his heavy frame and bowling action. Further, he played in only 13 of England’s 36 Test matches during the 2007 to 2009 period, but nevertheless remained a core member of the England squad, being selected whenever available. He announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the 2009 Ashes series on July 15, 2009.
He was however available for future commitments in One Day International and Twenty20 International matches. It was then reported on September 7, 2009, that he had developed deep vein thrombosis after surgery on his knee. Andrew officially retired from all cricket on September 16, 2010.
