Alex Roy ( Full name: Alexander Roy) is an American TV host, podcaster, writer, and rally race driver. He has set different endurance driving records, including the US “Cannonball Run” transcontinental driving record. In this record, Alex and Dave Maher broke in 31 hours and 4 minutes in 2007.
It is featured in the 2019 documentary called APEX: The Secret Race Across America. Alex announced on April 1, 2015, that he had completed the transcontinental driving record in 26 hours, and 28 minutes across the United States. Subsequently, he revealed it to be an April Fools prank intended to highlight the lack of fact-checking in online media.

Alex Roy Cannonball | 32 Hours 7 Minutes
In 1983, a prior record for crossing the U.S. from New York City to Los Angeles of 32 hours, 7 minutes was set during the US Express by David Diem and Doug Turner. The record was an unofficial successor to the Cannonball Run and never documented or confirmed. Documentary filmmaker Cory Welles called it to Alex’s attention who decided he should be the one to break it.
Alex and his longtime friend & co-driver Jonathan Goodrich completed a practice run in December 2005 and finished with a time of 34 hours and 46 minutes. In April 2006, a subsequent attempt added a spotter plane. However, the failure of Alex’s M5’s fuel pump ended the run in Oklahoma. Alex and replacement co-driver David Maher embarked on another run on October 7, 2006. David is a New York investment banker who was also Alex’s 2003 Gumball co-driver.

Brock Yates, the originator of the Cannonball Run does not acknowledge any records or sanction races because of his concern that “somebody was going to get killed”. Alex expresses similar concern with regard to anyone attempting to break his claimed record. He published a book titled The Driver: My Dangerous Pursuit of Speed and Truth in the Outlaw Racing World in October 2007, on his racing career. They withheld information on the record-setting run until the book came out. In October 2013, Atlanta-native Ed Bolian broke Alex’s transcontinental record by 28 hours, 50 minutes, and 26 seconds.

He set another Transcontinental Record or Cannonball Record in 2015 in the electric car class, with a time of 57 hours 48 minutes, from L.A. to N.Y.C. In this new record, Alex bested the previous time of 58:55 preceded by records of 67:21 and 76:05. He was with Carl J Reese and Deena Mastracci who had set the prior 58:55 time. The team set the 57:48 time using a Tesla Model S and its autopilot feature.
Alex and teammates Warren Ahner, and Franz Aliquo ( Streetwars founder) broke the Electric & semi-Autonomous Cannonball Run records again From August 24–27 of 2016, by driving a Tesla Model S 90D 2,877 miles from the Portofino Inn to the Red Ball Garage in 55 hours. They broke the prior record by 2 hours & 48 minutes. In this record, Tesla Autopilot was engaged 97.7% of the journey. Both the US Fleet Tracking device and Comma.ai’s Chffr video logging software were used to capture the GPS data and video evidence.
Alex and his co-driver Dan Zorrilla broke the Electric Cannonball Run record again on December 28–31 of 2017 with an early-production Tesla Model 3 delivered to California-based customers only. They drove 2,860 miles eastbound from the Portofino Inn to the Red Ball Garage in 50 hours and 16 minutes. The GPS Tracks application captured GPS data and video evidence shared on YouTube.
Alex’s record was beaten in July 2019, by a family team of Robin Jedi Thomsen and her parents Lars Thomsen and Betty Legler. Between 12–14 July 2019, they used 48 hours and 10 minutes of driving in a Long-Range Rear-Wheel-Drive Tesla Model 3 ( westbound for 2,835 miles 4,562 km).
