Al Franken (Full Name: Alan Stuart Franken) is a popular American comedian, politician, media personality, and author who worked as a United States senator from Minnesota from 2009 through 2018. Currently, Al works as the host of The Al Franken Show Saturday mornings on SiriusXM radio. This show covers topics including global affairs, politics, the 2020 presidential election, and entertainment.
In September 2021, Al started a 15-city live tour, his first since semi-retiring from comedy during his time in the Senate. He was known in the 1970s and 1980s as a staff writer and performer on the television comedy show Saturday Night Live. Following decades as an entertainer, he was a prominent liberal political activist, hosting The Al Franken Show on Air America Radio.
Al was elected to the United States Senate in 2008 as the nominee of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer-Labor Party (DFL, an affiliate of the Democratic Party), defeating incumbent Republican Senator Norm Coleman by 312 votes out of around three million casts (a margin of just over 0.01%). He received reelection in 2014 with 53.2% of the vote over Republican challenger Mike McFadden. He resigned on January 2, 2018, after many allegations of sexual misconduct were made against him.

Although Al had asked to be allowed to appear before the Senate Ethics Committee to give his side of the story, on December 6 Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told him he had to announce his resignation by five o’clock or he could be censured and stripped of committee assignments. On December 7, Al reported his intention to resign his Senate seat. Al resigned on January 2, 2018, and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton appointed the lieutenant governor, Tina Smith, to Al’s seat until a November 2018 special election, which Smith won.
