Adrienne Alpert Accident | Injuries

On May 23, 2000, at 12 AM PT,  Adrienne who was assigned to cover a news conference in Hollywood was badly burned when the microwave transmitter extending from a KABC van came too close to a 34,500-volt power line resulting in an explosion. The reporter was then taken to Grossman Burn Center based in Sherman Oaks by air, then doctors had an emergency surgery so as restore blood flow to burn areas over 25% of her body. Heather MacKenzie who was the photographer of Adrienne and a Los Angeles police officer suffered minor injuries as well and was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and released later on.

The accident occurred about 9:45 a.m. when Adrienne and MacKenzie were setting up for a live broadcast from the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Gordon Street, some few meters from Hollywood Forever Cemetery. According to witnesses, Adrienne was inside the van as the transmitter was being raised. MacKenzie was helping position the transmitter when it touched the high-voltage wire that triggered the explosion.
