In the UK’s 2018 National Book Awards, it was the book of the year. This Is Going to Hurt was well received by critics including in the literary pages of The Scotsman, The Guardian, The Financial Times, and The Times. It also won the National Book Awards in the categories of Book Club Book of the Year, New Writer of the Year, and Non-Fiction Book of the Year.
Additionally, the book was also awarded Sunday Times Humour Book of the Year, Blackwell’s Debut Book of the Year 2017, and won both the overall prize in the 2017 Books Are My Bag Readers’ Awards as well as non-fiction Book of the Year. The BBC announced on July 6, 2018, that he would be adapting This Is Going to Hurt as a 7-part comedy-drama for BBC One. Sister Pictures made the comedy-drama and Adam serves as one of the co-executive producers. In October 2019, his second book called Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas came out.

In betwixt 2004 and 2010, he worked as a doctor leaving the profession after a patient suffered an undiagnosed placenta praevia. The baby was delivered stillborn but the mother was taken to the intensive care unit. Prior to leaving medicine for a career in writing, Adam worked for a number of years as a gynecology and obstetrics trainee. He wrote textbooks on the subject.
