Rabbi Abby Stein
She did not do any rabbinical work for a few years after leaving the Hasidic group and then coming out. Abby spoke to HuffPost about the first two years after quitting, saying, “I felt very much cut off from God. A rabbi described it as “Post-God Traumatic Disorder.” When God is merely a terrible guy who will punish you, that’s it, I thought. I’m not interested in learning anything about the Jewish faith. This is complete nonsense.
Later, she resumed practicing Judaism and declared, “I don’t believe in God, but I believe in Judaism,” citing the Jewish people and the Jewish calendar, as well as Jewish music, food, and spirituality, as particular elements that inspired her to rediscover some Jewish customs. While she does not observe Shabbat in an Orthodox sense, she claimed that performing simple rituals like lighting candles on Shabbat helped her feel grounded during difficult times prior to coming out and that “it became a mental health and spiritual practice.”
She virtually always shares photos of herself celebrating Shabbat on social media. T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights is a rabbinical organization that Abby actively participates in. She also belongs to Tirdof: New York Jewish Clergy for Justice, a coalition of T’ruah and Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), a rabbinical advocacy group.
